The Flower Market in Mongkok a glorious riot of colour, the Yuen Po Bird Market (or garden) for an insight into old Hong Kong Culture, the small decline of white people living in Hong Kong, why is Disney associated with ladies stockings and underwear?, the Tai Cheong Bakery - home to the most famous egg tarts in the world, the amazing Porsche GT 3 RS, beggars on Cat Street and a scary looking stick insect at the Peak.

The Flower Market in Hong Kong

Kind of iconic is our Flower Market, I have never known it not to be busy! every day it is teeming with local residents and tourist alike, the place certainly has a buzz about it.

Hong Kong seems to have a gazillion flower shops and Interflora is popular here but it makes no difference it is just not the same as visiting the flower market where deals can be made and any permutation of bouquets is possible, Hotel buyers flock here as well as our 5 star Hotels are seemingly in competition as to who can produce the best lobby flower display (and I take my hat of to the Four Seasons Hotel, the Peninsula Hotel and the Kowloon Shangri La Hotel for their outstanding floral displays).

I strongly recommend that any visitor visit the Flower Market and I am always delighted to take my clients there on one of my Private Tours of Hong Kong.

The Yuen Po Bird Market, 8 Yuen Po Street

It is located right next to the Flower Market so you can kill two birds with one stone (no pun intended).

Personally I have never seen the attraction of keeping a bird in a cage (my Auntie used to have budgies!) it just seems a little cruel and more than a little noisy but in Hong Kong it is a thing, mainly with old codgers and you have to really respect the fact that they dote on the birds and treat them like royalty!

Absolutely worth a visit!

Private Hong Kong Tours and the real Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Immigration Department has just released the latest population statistics from the 2016 by census and as usual it is full of interesting numbers.

The white population of Hong Kong is now just 0.8% of the total population! but then again even when I was a kid here it was always about 1% so it hasn't changed much.

The Chinese population has also dropped since the 2011 by census and they are now 92% of the population and there has been a lot of growth in what our Government calls Ethnic Minorities so we are becoming a little more cosmopolitan.

For me Hong Kong is simply the best place in the world to live.

Hong Kong Guided Sightseeing Tours

The Porsche GT3 RS

.........is a simply magnificent sports car, there is no other word to describe this Porsche and what wowed me more was that the driver was a young local lady who clearly enjoyed the car and the attention!

If I was minted this would be right up there on my list of priorities although I would skip the purple colour which is an option for this Porsche.

Sexy stockings and wholesome Disney - bit of an oxymoron

I have to admit I was somewhat taken aback by this, I was walking along Queens Road Central when I noticed this shop display of sexy stockings and underwear hand in hand with a Disney promotion, ie buy our products and get a free Disney notebook... huh?

This is the last place I would expect to see the Disney logo in a product promotion.

The Tai Cheong Bakery, Mid Levels, Hong Kong

Chris Patten the last Governor of Hong Kong had a bit of thing for egg tarts, more specifically egg tarts from the Tai Cheong Bakery, he put them on the map!

Honestly, as much I love these egg tarts (and there are better ones available in Hong Kong) I simply cannot understand why every day there are long lines outside of this place, it is just an egg tart and frankly these blasted things are very messy to eat, the base crumbles far to easily but hey they are a true Hong Kong icon.

Personally I prefer mango pudding with a cherry on top with a dash of carnation milk.. now that is a true Hong Kong iconic food product.

..... oh and most Hong Kong foodies would have me burnt at the stake for suggesting that egg tarts are NOT the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Cruise Ship Shore Excursions

Celine, Philippe and Ashlen at TST Promenade in Kowloon.

What a lovely day for a shore excursion, sunshine in abundance and what a fabulous view... if you are coming to Hong Kong on a cruise ship then contact me in advance and book one of my Private Tours of Hong Kong with pick up at the Cruise Terminal.

The Classic Porsche 356

I am not a fan of classic cars, never have and never will.... I admit it is a lovely car but it not even close to the Porsche GT3 RS featured in this blog post which is just mean and raw and no doubt classic car fans would have me burnt at the stake (again!) for suggesting such nonsense.

Oh well.

Beggars on the streets of Hong Kong

It is a pitiful sight.

I have to say though that it is not a very common sight around Hong Kong but when I see these beggars (and quite often it is very old women) it reminds me that the Hong Kong Government fails the poorest people in Hong Kong but this lady is not as destitute as you might think - she will have a roof over her head and she will not be starving.

Her pitch / location has been chosen with the greatest of care, opposite the Man Mo Temple which has thousands of tourists visiting every day and down the steps leading to Cat Street / Upper Lascar Row so a steady stream of cashed up Tourists going past for at least 8 hours a day, so she is quite a canny operator.

It does look like a tragic scene but it might be all is not what it seems.

Bugs

Hong Kong has it's fair share of bugs and most of them are just scary as opposed to being lethal. This critter is a stick insect and frankly it does not have a mean disposition, the same cannot be said of our giant Centipedes though!

If bugs are your thing there are plenty of photo opportunities.

Location - Lugard Road, the Peak, Hong Kong Island.

Oh my golly gosh, the simply amazing Pagani Hypercar, hand made in Italy
